How people search for a plumber
Of all the home trades, plumbing is the most urgent. A burst pipe or a backed-up drain doesn’t wait for three quotes. The customer searches on a phone, often with water on the floor, scans the map pack for a nearby business with good reviews, and calls. The first plumber who answers and sounds competent usually gets the job. That makes plumbing SEO less about blog posts and more about three things: showing up in the map pack, looking trustworthy in the ten seconds someone spends on your profile, and picking up.
There is a planned side too: water heater replacements, repiping, bathroom and kitchen rough-ins. Those customers compare, and your website does more of the selling. Different jobs search differently, as a year of New York data shows:
| Search | Avg. a month | Pattern | Page it needs |
|---|---|---|---|
| plumber near me | 40,500 | Steady; peaked at 60,500 in February 2026 | Your Business Profile and home page |
| drain cleaning | 6,600 | Steady, 4,400–9,900 a month | Drains and sewer lines |
| emergency plumber | 5,400 | Spiky: 1,000 in November 2025, 14,800 in July 2026 | Emergency service, if you truly offer it |
| water heater repair | 4,400 | Spiky: 1,000 in September 2025, 14,800 in July 2026 | Water heaters, tank and tankless |
| frozen pipes | 880 | 4,400 in February 2026; 110–210 from April to November | Frozen and burst pipes, live by December |
| burst pipe | 260 | 880 in February 2026 | Same page as frozen pipes |
Google Ads search volume for New York State, September 2025 to August 2026, retrieved September 2026. Statewide figures; Long Island is a share of each.
Plumbing demand never really stops, but it spikes without warning. A frozen-pipe page written in February is written for next year. Build the seasonal pages before the season.
Pages that work for a plumbing company
Give every job type its own page, written for the person with the problem: what’s probably wrong, what to do before you arrive, how fast you can get there, and roughly what the visit involves.
- Emergency plumbing, only if your phone is answered at night and on weekends.
- Drain cleaning and sewer lines, including camera inspections if you do them.
- Water heaters: repair, replacement, tankless conversions.
- Leak detection and frozen or burst pipes.
- Gas lines and backflow testing, only if you hold the licenses or certifications they require.
- Fixtures, bathrooms and kitchens for the planned work.
- Town pages for the places you serve most, with real jobs and details from each.
Make the phone number tap-to-call on every page, and put it at the top. Most of these visitors are on a phone and in a hurry.
Google Business Profile setup for plumbers
- Primary category: Plumber. It matches the biggest searches. Add secondary categories only for real lines of work, such as Drainage service, Water leak detection service, Water damage restoration service, Gas installation service, Septic system service or Heating contractor if you service boilers.
- List individual jobs as services on the profile. Categories are few; services can be many.
- Hours you actually keep. If you list 24-hour service, someone must answer at 3 a.m. Google asks for your regular customer-facing hours.
- Hide your address if customers don’t visit your shop, and set up to 20 service areas within about two hours’ drive.
- Your real business name. “Joe’s Plumbing 24/7 Emergency Plumber Suffolk” breaks Google’s name rules and invites a suspension.
If your profile is set up and still missing from Maps, see why businesses don’t show up on Google Maps.
Local Services Ads for plumbers
Plumbers are one of Google’s Local Services Ads categories in the US. The ads sit above the map pack and you pay per lead. Google screens advertisers, which can include checking the licenses a business and its owners are required to hold. Since 2025, businesses that pass get a single Google Verified badge, which replaced Google Guaranteed.
Google’s ad ranking weighs your rating, review count and responsiveness, says missed calls can hurt, and notes that turning on messages and bookings helps catch leads on nights and weekends. For a one- or two-truck shop, the hardest part is answering while your hands are in a crawl space. Missed-call text-back sends every unanswered caller an instant text so they wait for you instead of calling the next ad.
Plumbing licenses and your website
Long Island licenses plumbers differently in each county, and customers increasingly check.
- Suffolk County licenses master plumbers at the county level under Chapter 563, Article XI of the county code. The code bars anyone without a license from holding themselves out as licensed in any advertising, and requires licensees to give customers their county license number in writing.
- Nassau County doesn’t license plumbers countywide. Master plumber licenses come from the towns (Hempstead, North Hempstead and Oyster Bay each have an examining board of plumbers), and some villages and cities add their own registration. Separately, the county’s home improvement license list includes sewer cleaning and cesspool work, so those jobs can need a Nassau home improvement license as well.
Put each license number in your site footer, on your contact page and in your Business Profile description. It costs nothing, it answers the first question careful customers ask, and it gives Google and AI answer engines a verifiable fact about you. This is general information, not legal advice; confirm requirements with the county or town that licenses you.
A review strategy for plumbers
An emergency fix produces the most grateful customer you’ll ever have, and that gratitude fades by the next morning. Ask on the spot, then text the review link before the technician pulls away. Ask every customer, not only the happy ones, and never offer a discount for a review; Google prohibits both. Reply to each review within a day or two, and treat a bad review as a public chance to show how you handle problems. Our guide on responding to Google reviews has examples.
How long it takes, and what it costs
“SEO for plumbers” draws about 590 searches a month in the US, so expect plenty of agency pitches. Judge them by calls, not rankings. Most plumbing companies see clear results in three to six months; how long local SEO takes explains the timeline. Ongoing local SEO typically costs $500–$2,500 a month.
